Connect Familia MCP to ChatGPT, Codex and Claude
Your family board, from a conversation with an assistant
“What’s happening tomorrow, and what do we still need to prepare?” An AI assistant can offer general advice. Connected to Familia, it can use your actual plans and tasks. With write permission, it can also create a trip checklist directly on your family board.
Familia has its own MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) gives assistants a shared way to access tools and data with your permission. This guide connects it to ChatGPT, Codex, Claude Desktop or Claude Code.
The names differ: ChatGPT and Codex may call it a plugin, Claude a connector, and command-line tools an MCP server. Underneath is the same authorized connection. This guide does not require Familia to have a public plugin directory listing.
What you need
- A Familia account with household access and an active Smart or Founder plan. MCP is not included in Free; your assistant subscription is separate.
- An assistant that allows custom remote MCP connections. Availability depends on your account and any workspace administrator policies.
- The server URL:
https://mcp.family.asynq.org/mcp.
Use the full address, including /mcp. The server runs remotely, so these steps require neither Node.js nor a Familia server running on your computer.
ChatGPT: add a custom plugin
Open Plugins in ChatGPT. Select + → Add custom MCP server, enter Familia as the name, a short description and the URL above. Use OAuth authentication, review the permissions warning and complete Create as a plugin. Install the plugin, then select it with @ in a new conversation.
If the option is missing, check custom MCP availability for your account and workspace policies. These steps do not imply that Familia has a public directory listing. The interface changes over time; see OpenAI’s current connection guide.
Codex: connect the MCP server directly
With Codex CLI installed, run codex mcp add familia --url https://mcp.family.asynq.org/mcp in your terminal. Then run codex mcp login familia and complete sign-in in your browser. Check the configuration with codex mcp list.
This connects the server directly. Local Codex configuration alone does not install a plugin in ChatGPT on the web. See Codex MCP documentation for supported clients and settings.
Claude Desktop: add a custom connector
In your Claude account, open Customize → Connectors, or Settings → Connectors in an older interface. Choose + Add → Add custom connector, enter Familia and the server URL. Review the detected authentication settings, use OAuth and finish connecting your Familia account. If the client offers an OAuth client registration choice, use Register automatically for Familia.
Enable the connector in a conversation through + → Connectors. A workspace administrator may need to add it first. See Claude’s remote connector guide for details and current availability. Do not edit claudedesktopconfig.json for this remote connection.
Claude Code: add MCP from the terminal
With Claude Code installed, run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user familia https://mcp.family.asynq.org/mcp.
The --scope user option makes the configuration available to your user across projects. Open Claude Code, type /mcp, select Familia and complete OAuth sign-in in your browser. You can also check status with claude mcp list. See the Claude Code MCP documentation for details.
What you authorize during sign-in
On Familia’s authorization page, follow the sign-in and phone approval instructions. Select the households the assistant may access and decide whether it may also write. Read access is enough for a first try. You can revoke access later in Familia’s MCP token settings.
Google Calendar requires separate consent and is not shared with the assistant automatically. Enabling it also requires confirmation that your chosen provider, plan or configuration does not use connected-app data to train generalized AI models. Leave it off if you have not verified that condition.
The assistant provider also processes the data it receives under its own terms. Do not paste login credentials or MCP tokens into ordinary chat messages.
Your first question and first task
Try: “Use Familia to list the available households and ask which one I want to work with.” Then: “What’s happening tomorrow in this household? Don’t change anything yet.”
With write access enabled, follow up with: “Suggest a packing checklist for a trip. Show me the draft before saving it to Familia.” Depending on permissions, the assistant can search tasks and plans, read daily and weekly overviews, create and update items, work with lists and attachments, or find free days. Tools can also delete items, so grant write access deliberately. Some writes can trigger notifications to household members.
If the connection fails, check the full URL, completed sign-in, selected household, Familia plan and whether tools are enabled in the conversation. If reads work but writes fail, check the permissions you granted. An empty result does not necessarily mean an empty family board: it may mean a different household or missing calendar consent.
Your phone remains the place for everyday family coordination. MCP lets you work with the same tasks and plans from an assistant you already use. For practical examples, read How I use a family organizer MCP at home.
